Posted by pamela mccoll on Friday, January 18, 2013,
Key points:

Santa Claus Quits Smoking, Asks Patents to Quit to Save Kids’ Lives

Santa Claus will deliver toys this year without his pipe because of growing concerns about his health, the health of Mrs. Claus, and the growing number of court orders and even laws prohibiting smoking in homes with children.

- Dec. 21, 2012 - WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 21, 2012): Santa Claus will deliver toys this year without his pipe – and its smoke encircling his head like a wreath – because of growing concern...

December 25th. Seth Godin

Posted by pamela mccoll on Tuesday, December 25, 2012,

In our best possible future together, I hope we'll do a better job of learning to see one another.

Some people see a struggling person and turn away. Others see a human being and work to open a door or lend a hand. There are possiblities all around us. Not just the clicks of recycling a tired cliche, but the opportunity to be brave. If we only had the guts.

Smoke Free Movies moving into mainstream and the need to galvanize the public, too bad Movies Stars didn't do it first.

Posted by pamela mccoll on Tuesday, December 11, 2012,

While the actors didn’t puff away throughout the entire film, we did see yet another glamorous actress–this time, Berenice Marlohe–clad in an evening gown with a drop-dead accessory, a smoldering cigarette.

Skyfall delivered more tobacco impressions (smoking incidence per film times the number of admission tickets) than any other movie in 2012, the groups says.

“The movie Skyfall had over 20 smoking incidences, delivering over 840 million impressions in the U.S. alone,” says Stanton A...

Comments from Kids in Newspaper on Parents Smoking

Posted by pamela mccoll on Monday, November 5, 2012,

All kids really want this Christmas is for their parents to stop smoking

More than half of children with a parent who smokes say that their one wish for Christmas is that their mum or dad give up smoking.

Kids say they would go without Christmas presents, give up their pocket money and complete their homework every night, if it meant their parents would quit their smoking habit.

Almost 98% of children with a smoking parent wish that they would quit, with three quarters worrying about their pare...

The nicotine delivery device industry leach onto Twas

Posted by pamela mccoll on Friday, November 2, 2012,
In a google alert I discovered that the nicotine pushers are using the media hype of this story to push nicotine delivery devices. They issued a media release that was picked up by at least one paper. " Santa smoking removed from iconic poem after decades, changed to protect children. Leave Santa alone, there are better ways to quit. Do you think history should be changed to protect children ? " Leave Santa Alone.

This is classic nicotine marketing manipulation. Remember when Central Park wen...

Who Highjacked Santa ?

Posted by pamela mccoll on Friday, October 19, 2012,

Who highjacked Santa? The tobacco industry's commercial exploitation of Santa to sell cigarettes are worth raising when questions are asked about your adaptation of a classic.

Go to http://tobacco.stanford.edu/ and then Tobacco Advertising Thermes > Infants > Santa Puffing

Murad ads are dated 1920. Tareyton is from 1970 — so Santa imagery spans at least half a century of tobacco advertising.

Another way to find a set of Santa ads on this site, not quite as inc...

Clement C. Moore writes: I wrote this for my children, it was never meant to be published.

Posted by pamela mccoll on Wednesday, October 10, 2012,
The poem was printed one year after it was written and it appeared anonymously. It was not until years later that Moore
laid claim to it when he included it in an anthology of other work - all extremely different than the sentimental style of
Twas. Some scholars seriously doubt Moore wrote the poem. Many believe it was Henry Livingston's hand and that
he is the true poet of Christmas Eve.

IGNITE A CONVERSATION AROUND SMOKING PREVENTION

Posted by pamela mccoll on Wednesday, September 5, 2012,
I noticed in the news today that Kentucky is gearing up to further smoke- free legislation in 2013. It has been my
direction for some time to put energies into getting kids to not start. Einstein said it is easier to get started in anything than it is to get oneself out of anything.... I don't know the exact quote but you get the idea. Addiction can be a tricky concept to explain to an adult let alone a child but this is the conversation we need to develop in our social cure to tobacco use.

Pleased to find support and encouragement and praise for the illustrators. Quotable and memorable comments of the day:

" I am not a fan of smoking so this was a great idea fo me. "
"Very colorful illustrated children's book...

Printing on demand

Posted by pamela mccoll on Saturday, August 11, 2012,
I have printed this book in the old fashioned way - by the truck load and I have them in distribution channels across North Smerica the old fashioned way. Yes we printed with FSC paper and vegetable inks.  I met a woman last night at a reception who was a first time publisher who was going to print on demand. It is something I don't know alot about and I wonder how this works out financially for a writer or self publisher.  I find it not impossible but challenging to be a small publisher espe...

French and Spanish Editions are in bindery

Posted by pamela mccoll on Saturday, August 11, 2012,
It is just days away until the books are packed up in boxes and the distribution starts that we have been working on for almost a year now. It is not always the case that a publisher releases translations in the same year as launching the book but I felt there was a market for spanish and french books so I thought it would meet the market - so why wait.
The book is finding support and it is only every once in awhile that I find someone who says hands off the classics. The classics will always...

MerryMakers Toy Makers for Reindeer

Posted by pamela mccoll on Tuesday, April 10, 2012,
Today we received the final sample of the wonderful toy that will be sold along with the book. It is the cutest reindeer and is areplica of the character on the cover red nose and all. There is one reindeer in the book with a red nose and his name is not Rudolph and his noses does not glow. He is special nonetheless and so we have made him into a 9" soft toy and he will be ready for the holiday season of 2012.  He is very soft and has a scarf and is the best reindeer ever.  We think we will s...

Spent Easter Saturday morning checking out this site out of Australia. Love their graphics and hope they take a look at Twas as it is going to be available worldwide as Atlas has reps everywhere. I would like to write a guest blog on their site and hopefully someone will review it and help get the word out there about the loss of the pipe.  I had a call from Merry Makers yesterday and the reindeer toy sample is flying here for Monday. Then it will take months to get the little character made ...

[National policy report, March 8, 2012]

Twas - "The Most Famous Poem in the English Language."

Over three million books were published in the US in 2010 ( from available Bowker reports 2011). In addtion hundreds of thousands of English-language books are published each year outside the US. Book industry sales are declining and adult nonfiction print unit book sales peaked in 2007 and have declined each year since then ( Publishers Weekly Jan.12 2012)  Similiarly, bookstore sales peaked in 2007 and have fallen each year since then. 1)      Rango, Babar, Madeline, Curious George, Three Little Bears, Frosty the Snowman. They are amongst many popular children’s tales that reference or have been illustrated to reference smoking. Do the copyright owners of these works have a responsibility to sanitize their stories to rid them of any smoking references?

It is a question of doing what you believe is important and what you believe will make a difference – even if it is a small thing.  I believe we all have a role...

Santa Quits Smoking In New Edition

    Of Best-Selling Christmas Classic

A new edition of the timeless classic children’s book, Twas The Night Before Christmas, is being released amidst controversy. The version being published by child advocate Pamela McColl has edited out references of Santa smoking a pipe. It raises the question: Should we alter a best-selling institution under any circumstances, even when doing so may save lives? It also puts a spotlight on the preventi...
