Smoking in Movies - Academy Awards 2013

Posted by pamela mccoll on Friday, January 18, 2013,
Key points:

• 61% of all nominated movies featured smoking this year.

• Smoking was heavy (50+ incidents) in nearly half of these films (47%, 8/17), including pipe-smoking in The Hobbit (PG-13)

• Half a dozen biographically-based films were nominated for 2012 — all with smoking. But only 25% of youth-rated movies with smoking (2/8) were biographically-based.

• PG-13 nominees delivering the most tobacco impressions (prelim.) in theaters include

• The Hobbit (Time Warner, 4.1 billion...

The nicotine delivery device industry leach onto Twas

Posted by pamela mccoll on Friday, November 2, 2012,
In a google alert I discovered that the nicotine pushers are using the media hype of this story to push nicotine delivery devices. They issued a media release that was picked up by at least one paper. " Santa smoking removed from iconic poem after decades, changed to protect children. Leave Santa alone, there are better ways to quit. Do you think history should be changed to protect children ? " Leave Santa Alone.

This is classic nicotine marketing manipulation. Remember when Central Park wen...

Santa smoking and the impact for kids with parents that smoke.

Posted by pamela mccoll on Friday, October 26, 2012,
Dear Santa,

I would like three things for Christmas. The first thing I would like the most is for my dad to stop smoking. He wastes money on cigarettes. Now he does not even spend time with us. It can also hurt his lungs.

The second thing I would like is some perfume. It is called “so perfect”. You can get it at Macy’s in the mall for $30.00.

The third thing I want for Christmas is new earrings. They look like reindeer. You can get them at Walmart for $5.99.

Who Highjacked Santa ?

Posted by pamela mccoll on Friday, October 19, 2012,

Who highjacked Santa? The tobacco industry's commercial exploitation of Santa to sell cigarettes are worth raising when questions are asked about your adaptation of a classic.

Murad ads are dated 1920. Tareyton is from 1970 — so Santa imagery spans at least half a century of tobacco advertising.

Another way to find a set of Santa ads on this site, not quite as inc...

Clement C. Moore writes: I wrote this for my children, it was never meant to be published.

Posted by pamela mccoll on Wednesday, October 10, 2012,
The poem was printed one year after it was written and it appeared anonymously. It was not until years later that Moore
laid claim to it when he included it in an anthology of other work - all extremely different than the sentimental style of
Twas. Some scholars seriously doubt Moore wrote the poem. Many believe it was Henry Livingston's hand and that
he is the true poet of Christmas Eve.

IGNITE A CONVERSATION AROUND SMOKING PREVENTION

Posted by pamela mccoll on Wednesday, September 5, 2012,
I noticed in the news today that Kentucky is gearing up to further smoke- free legislation in 2013. It has been my
direction for some time to put energies into getting kids to not start. Einstein said it is easier to get started in anything than it is to get oneself out of anything.... I don't know the exact quote but you get the idea. Addiction can be a tricky concept to explain to an adult let alone a child but this is the conversation we need to develop in our social cure to tobacco use.

Posted by pamela mccoll on Wednesday, April 25, 2012,
On May 31st. 2012 Santa Claus - without doubt the most influential "character" for young impressionable young readers quits smoking his pipe.

On September 4th. 2012 the most famous poem in the English language is published less the depiction and reference to Santa engaging in smoking his pipe in the middle of the Moore family's living room. Good-bye second hand smoke - which can linger and leave a health risk for up to two weeks in an enclosed area.

For 190 years through mulitudes of renditio...
